My New Home

I find myself sitting on the front porch of my friend/boss’s place in a quiet little town called Haiku. I never thought in a million years that I would be living and working anywhere in Hawaii. Now all of the sudden I find myself in Maui. Words alone cannot describe how beautiful it is here. And it blows my mind that I have just barely scratched the surface. I am looking forward to learning more about the island and discovering more of the hidden treasures that await.

I was lucky enough to have a couple of days before I started work to see some things and experience some of the things that are not afforded living in Idaho. Yesterday we went to the beach, I have never been around warm water in the ocean. The only other time I have been that close to the ocean was when I was living in Oregon for school and went to the coast. We played around in the water for a while then went to a Makena Beach and did some snorkeling. What an amazing thing. I was a little sad that I did not get to see a turtle while in the water however once I was drying out and chilling on the beach we saw a couple come in fairly close to shore. I figure that I will have more opportunities to see them. I also hope to see a ray or two at some point. I will try to bring my go-pro next time and catch some video of the coral and fish. It is really mind blowing to see them in the water and not through a pain of glass at an aquarium.

Today I took my motor-scooter out and did a little cruising around. I stopped at a lookout and watched some guys surfing. I cant believe that they don’t impail each other out there. There were so many of them and so close to each other. I was several hundred feet away from the water at the lookout and while watching them a big shadow in the water caught my eye. It was another HUGE turtle. I must have seen five or six of them and from the distance I was from them they must have been huge.

I cannot even put into words how beautiful it is here. So green with so much vegetation. So far there has always been a nice breeze from the trade winds and daily rain showers. It has truly been the paradise that everyone that has been here has told me about. I would highly recommend that everyone make a trip over here at some point. You will not be disappointed.

Tomorrow I start work at my new job. I am really looking forward to getting back into the kitchen. I wont lie and say I am not nervous but I think it will be great. I will continue to post things about my journey as well as pictures as I go.

Now back to relaxing on the porch watching the house geckos demolish the local bugs. I don’t know if I could have asked for a more perfect place to call my new home. Even though I do miss some aspects of my old life and some opportunities that decided to present themselves right before I moved. For now this is my current path and I look forward to whatever the future holds.

My Final Post from the mainland

Well in just over a week I will be making my move to Maui. It is still really hard to believe that this is actually happening. However I am getting more and more excited as it gets closer and closer. Only 3 more days of work and then the trip begins.
But the hard work still has to be done. I am trying to get everything moved out of my apartment over this weekend which means that I really shouldn’t be taking the time to write this up right now. There is still a lot of work to be done. I have all of my kitchen and living room to pack up still and some random junk in my bedroom to go through. Hopefully I can get a big portion of that done today and then can spend the first part of next week cleaning up to get as much of my deposit back as possible.
I think one of the things I am most looking forward to with this move is the lifestyle change. I am only taking my clothes and cameras and my laptop. I am leaving all of the technology that has kind of consumed my free time behind. I have a feeling that I will be able to find lots of fun things to do with my free time assuming that I have some free time that is.
Well by this time next week I will only be a few days away from my flight to Maui. I am sure that I will have lots of new pictures to post and hopefully have a place to call home. I already have a motor scooter to get around the island on and a job so the last piece of the puzzle is some place to live.
Maybe I will get in one last update but most likely this will be my last post before I board the plane to a new and exciting place.

Food I am looking forward to experiencing

So hard to believe that in a little over 3 week away from moving away from life as I know it. I am really look forward to this change of life and scenery. There are some things that I am really looking forward to such as the fresh fruit.  The problem is I don’t know what I will want to eat first. I am a huge fan of pineapple so I imagine that I will start there. I have read that there are yellow and white pineapples. The white pineapple apparently does not have a very long shelf life which is why we never see it but it is supposed to have an amazing flavor.

I am also looking forward to eating some of the different bananas that are over there. Along with things like some dragon fruit, mango, papaya, and rambutan.

One of the other big things I am looking forward to strangely is trying some poi. I made poi in school but I am looking forward to trying it in Hawaii and seeing if it is any different.

Not only is there a huge selection of fruits and vegetables to experience but there is all of the amazing seafood that will be available. I am a huge fan of fish so trying and eating so much seafood is going to be a extremely fun thing for me. I am really looking forward to not only eating it but also working with it. I have a feeling that I am going to pretty adapt at handling the different kinds of fish.

And there is one of my favorite ingredients that I am looking forward to seeing in use, Spam. I love spam and love the fact that it grosses people out. I think that it is because people think that any meat that is in a can has to be nasty. I am looking forward to trying some spam musubi, a dish my Mom and I have become big fans of eating and making. I think that we make a pretty good one so I am most excited to see how it stacks up against the real deal. It will also be fun to see some of the other ways it is used. I guess it is the a national food over there so I would imagine that there are all sorts fun preparations.

I think when it is all said and done I am really excited to get this adventure started and experiencing a whole new culture and way of life. It is going to be a crazy fun adventure.
