I find myself sitting on the front porch of my friend/boss’s place in a quiet little town called Haiku. I never thought in a million years that I would be living and working anywhere in Hawaii. Now all of the sudden I find myself in Maui. Words alone cannot describe how beautiful it is here. And it blows my mind that I have just barely scratched the surface. I am looking forward to learning more about the island and discovering more of the hidden treasures that await.
I was lucky enough to have a couple of days before I started work to see some things and experience some of the things that are not afforded living in Idaho. Yesterday we went to the beach, I have never been around warm water in the ocean. The only other time I have been that close to the ocean was when I was living in Oregon for school and went to the coast. We played around in the water for a while then went to a Makena Beach and did some snorkeling. What an amazing thing. I was a little sad that I did not get to see a turtle while in the water however once I was drying out and chilling on the beach we saw a couple come in fairly close to shore. I figure that I will have more opportunities to see them. I also hope to see a ray or two at some point. I will try to bring my go-pro next time and catch some video of the coral and fish. It is really mind blowing to see them in the water and not through a pain of glass at an aquarium.
Today I took my motor-scooter out and did a little cruising around. I stopped at a lookout and watched some guys surfing. I cant believe that they don’t impail each other out there. There were so many of them and so close to each other. I was several hundred feet away from the water at the lookout and while watching them a big shadow in the water caught my eye. It was another HUGE turtle. I must have seen five or six of them and from the distance I was from them they must have been huge.
I cannot even put into words how beautiful it is here. So green with so much vegetation. So far there has always been a nice breeze from the trade winds and daily rain showers. It has truly been the paradise that everyone that has been here has told me about. I would highly recommend that everyone make a trip over here at some point. You will not be disappointed.
Tomorrow I start work at my new job. I am really looking forward to getting back into the kitchen. I wont lie and say I am not nervous but I think it will be great. I will continue to post things about my journey as well as pictures as I go.
Now back to relaxing on the porch watching the house geckos demolish the local bugs. I don’t know if I could have asked for a more perfect place to call my new home. Even though I do miss some aspects of my old life and some opportunities that decided to present themselves right before I moved. For now this is my current path and I look forward to whatever the future holds.
